My first trial ever to “tuck” some microcopies or UX writing in Flip.

After a while I wrote the past event I attend that being an online audience here, so, for now, I try to write something that I pay attention the most since last year and I attempt to do the same thing as if I were a part of them. Since I’m newbie, I’ll write it from my perspective.

Okay, before jump right to the main topic, I introduce you a little of definition of UX Writer position. We know that this job is one of high-demand jobs these days because a lot of tech companies need them to write things in their app they created. UX Writer basically is a writer who write a copy or, in specific, microcopy that appears in digital product, one example we can recognize easily is mobile application. UX Writer aims to guide their user to guide and reach their goal through an interface. The complete definition you can refer to this.

For the first trial, I try to put my own ideas for one of my favorite applications in my phone, it’s called Flip. Flip, if I can simplify, it has a main feature that helps us to transfer money to different banks with no admin fee. I think this app really gives us a benefit to save more money rather than spend it for admin fee from banks. Yeah, you know, most of us really hate that kind of additional cost.

What part I propose?

We can refer to transfer money’s steps first below:

Steps to do when we need to transfer money using Flip

Based on the “Bantuan” button in the top right corner (in English, it’s a “Help” button), first, we need to input a destined bank account number and a specific money nominal. After that, we can choose which bank we use for transfer money to Flip’s bank account number. And then, Flip sends the money to our destined bank account number that we input first in the first step. That’s it.

So, what if a user don’t notice the “Help” button? Meanwhile, it contains an important steps so that we can proceed the transaction and if we really not pay attention to it, we’ll accidentally miss one of the steps.

Umm, this is actually based on my past experience. Because, me, as a newbie while using this, totally had no idea to transfer my money first to Flip’s bank account number. Yeah, so dumb, I know. But, thanks for administrator who guided me well when I had that problem.

Why? Because I didn’t notice that “Help” button. I relief that Flip have updated their version so the “Help” button can be seen clearly.

But, still, I’m wondering what if I tuck “something” in their product. Please, Flip, let me have that chance.

Solution of mine

Not big, but, I try to simplify this: make a in-app messaging and push notification.

In-App Messaging

In-App Messaging is a one of mobile messaging where displayed within the app, include popups as one example. I know you’re really familiar with this kind of notification in your favorite app that maybe bother you sometimes because they appeared on your screen in sudden.

So, apparently, I made this:

Oh ya, before I proceed this more, I validate that Flip using a kind of friendly language because most of their users are young adult and often to use “Kak” (in English, this is something like “bro” or “sis”) to greeting their users. So, I use that language too for improving.

This in-app messaging will appear right when you do your first ever transaction. It will help you to notice that there is “Help” button in the top right corner, just in case you don’t notice that. I provide two buttons too along with this message, to see the “Help” button or just ignore it. I wrote in less than 15 words (in Bahasa) to minimize time for read.

Why do I choose this? I think it’ll be more fit if you after install Flip and immediately want to make a transaction but you don’t notice because the “Help” button. It’ll suddenly appears so you will immediately aware of it. It’s possible in onboard message type too (like a little bubble that’ll show you what function of particular button) within the app. In-App messaging also shows our concern to the users, so it’ll add a satisfaction point.

Push Notification

Most of us are familiar with this. Push notification is a message that pops up in our mobile device, even though can’t be denied that personal computer have this kind of notification too. The main goal of it is let a user knows about something within the app without have to be in the app itself.

The example of push notification (Source: WPExplorer)

For the push notification, I decided to design like below.

The proposed push notification for Flip (the translation of the copy is right below in the end of article)

So, basically, this is pure based on my experience (LOL) and I try to pour my ideas here. It pops up when a user forget to send the money to Flip’s bank account number first and the transaction can not be proceed within 10 minutes.

Same as with in-app messaging, I try to input less than 15 words in body copy and 6 words for the headline (in Bahasa). I added a confused emoji to describe the users’ feeling when they wonder whether they haven’t done the steps yet completely and also added two buttons along the notification.

But, suddenly, I have a concern about the button placement. As far as I know, human eyes tend to focus more on the left side, so if I try to build awareness for the users to check their transaction (the blue button), maybe I should put the blue button in the left side like the picture below.

The Proposed Push Notification #2

May I know how’s your opinion? Do you prefer to put the blue button in the right or left side?

I think it’s enough for Flip episode UXW proposal. Again, like I mentioned earlier, it’s all based on my perspective and my own experience when I used it for the first time and I just put my ideas on it. So, it’s possible will be there will be another ideas too :)

If any of you have read this and have opinions or suggestions, please let me know through comment or get in touch with me on social media. You can also refer to this to see my proposal in PDF version. Thank you so much!

Little Note:

  1. The translation of the copy in in-app messaging:

“First time send money using Flip? See Help for the steps!”

The buttons (from left to right): “See Help”, “Ignore”

2. The translation of the copy in push notification:

Title: “Are you sure you already sent the money to Flip?” (confused emoji)

Body copy: “Sending money to bank X has not successful. Check your transaction and try again!”

The buttons (from left to right): “Ignore”, “Check your Transaction”
